Description
With the implementation of SB 493, the pharmacist’s role in community based clinical pharmacy programs has expanded greatly. It has been over a year since California signed a law that allows pharmacists to furnish hormonal contraceptives without a prescription, yet this service is not commonplace. This session will discuss the current status of hormonal contraceptive services in community pharmacy and address challenges in the implementation of these clinical services.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Explain the protocol for pharmacist-furnished hormonal contraceptive services
- List common barriers/challenges to the implementation of these clinical services
- Describe strategies for overcoming barriers in the implementation of hormonal contraceptive services
- Discuss the steps needed to implement the services in a community pharmacy
